Great Speeches: The Power and Peril of Political Rhetoric

The foundation of U.S. democracy rests on citizens’ ability to participate in civil society and influence public policy. It is important, therefore, that citizens be able to distinguish political speeches that rely on facts and reason from those that attempt to move us into action through purely emotional appeals.

This Academy challenges students to consider what makes a speech effective – and potentially dangerous. Throughout the week, students will examine the most stirring speeches in history to understand how political figures have used reason and pathos to move citizens toward their goals. Students will also craft their own speeches and explore the tools of effective speech writing.
